We are dedicated to renewing our common world

"Renewing the common world must be our ultimate goal...let us dedicate ourselves to the further building of a University at this hallowed place that will enable our children to inherit and renew the common world and to undertake things new and unforeseen by us as they prepare for leadership in the twenty-first century."

What is CNS?

CNS is a department within Information Systems and Technology (IST) under the leadership of Associate Vice Chancellor Shelton Waggener and is responsible for providing infrastructure and support services for all campus electronic communication. Additionally, CNS provides leadership to UC Berkeley in defining and preparing for the voice and data systems of the future.

Strategic Plan

In 2002, CNS conducted an in-depth study of communications on the U.C. Berkeley campus. As a result of the study, a Long-Range Strategic Plan for Campus Communications was created outlining areas of focus, short-term projects, and long-term issues through 2012. Achievements to date per the goals outlined in this plan include:

This past spring, CNS reviewed and updated the strategic plan. The resulting Addendum identified six interdependent areas of focus:

  1. Infrastructure
  2. New Technology
  3. Funding
  4. Communication
  5. Staff
  6. Business Effectiveness

Based upon these areas of focus, the Addendum lists project goals to be completed by Fall 2006, metrics for measuring the success of the goals, and the issues to continue to be considered in achieving the long-term goals of 2012.
